Art History Department in Celal Bayar University was established in 2011. Educational activities started in 2012. In Department, three faculty members and three research assistants are located.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN ART HISTORY

4th year undergraduate programme in the area of History of Art:

The main objective of the department is to instruct students into gaining a well-established critical perspective to History of Art within a large cultural span . Briefly, History of Art examines the historical evaluation of art. Morever, History of Art deals with any work of art in the conjuncture of the period it was produced, as well as taking into account religious, cultural, geographical, political events, and social movements of the period concerned. The programme embraces a great variety of subjects corresponding to diverse subject areas.

Three specialisations are currently offered:

Turkish and Islamic Art

Byzantine Art

Western and Contemporary Art

Turkish and Islamic Art

Objectives:

Examining pre-Islamic culture and art by Turks, and the Islamic artwork of all cultures influenced by Islam. This discipline is chronologically separated into Pre-Islamic Turkish Art, Islamic Art, Anatolian Seljuk Art and Ottoman Art. In particular, this discipline is divided into different specialisation areas such as architecture, architectural decoration, crafts, book arts, miniature and coins/numismatics.

Byzantine Art

Objectives:

Byzantine Art Programme examines the culture, art and art objects of the Eastern Roman Empire and its capital, Constantinople, which was founded by the Roman Empire’s separation into two parts at B.C. 395, and remained until its conquest by Fatih Sultan Mehmet in 1453. Byzantium Art Discipline contains Early Byzantine, Middle Byzantine and Late Byzantine periods. Moreover, in this discipline there are studies about the concept and forms of art, the effects of Christianity, and artworks of the Empire.

Western and Contemporary Art

Objectives:

This disciplinedeals with the works of painting, sculpture, architecture and crafts that have been produced by all movements of art in Europe from the Middle Ages upto now. Furthermore, this discipline examines the development in Modern Turkish Art dating from the end of 19th century in accordance with the developments in Europe.

Academic works that will be carried out in the Department of History of Art will assist the preservation, presentation, and appreciation of works of art in order to inform upcoming generations with Turkish art and provide the representation of Turkey with its artworks abroad. Graduate students could work in government agency, museums administered by the state/ private museums, libraries, archive, art and cultural units of media and government agencies and local administrations or private sector, the preservation, practice and control offices in the tourism industry as well as in shops where art objects are evaluated and sold.
